Cook County makes up for 33 miles of the Lake Michigan coastline. Cook County is the second largest county in the United States of America and has been projected to increase by 3% going into the year 2010. The city of Chicago has over half of the population in the county. There are 5,230,451 people living here.

The Illinois State Legislature established Cook County in January of the year 1831. At the time, there were only about 100 people living within 2,464 square miles. It was named after one of the youngest statesmen in Illinois history, Mr. Daniel Cook. Mr. Cook served Illinois as the first United States Representative.  He was also the first Attorney General for the state. No one can say for sure if Mr. Cook ever even visited the area.

Cook County has more Democratic members then any other county in Illinois. There has only been one time that the county as a whole voted Republican and that was for President Richard Nixon over George McGovern in 1972.  But it was close! 53.4% for Nixon and 46% for McGovern.
 
Today there are over 578 miles of roads in the county. The Cook County Highway Department takes responsibility for these thorough fares and are under the jurisdiction of the state of Illinois. You will find a wide variety of employment opportunities in Cook County with Education, Health, and Social Services being the leaders for employment. Cook county real estate image 2Cook County also has the largest medical districts in the nation with 40,000 employees and receives over $5 Billion in revenue. There are 3 major Teaching Hospitals in Cook County which include:


  • John H. Stroger Jr. Hospital, which was formerly the Cook County Hospital
  • Loyola University Medical Center
  • Northwestern Memorial Hospital

Cook County ranks second in the nation as a headquarters for Fortune 500 companies and is a center for manufacturing, trade and risk management.


The North America´s largest railroad hub Illinois Central Railroad is located in Cook County and has over 13 freight lines and 11 truck lines handling around 36,000 outbound railway Cook County real estate image 5carloads a day. Chicago has one of the best interstate systems in the country and can handle more the 41,700 outbound truck-loads of goods per day. There are over 2,134,456 housing units in the Cook County Real Estate area as of 2004 and it is home to the city of Chicago and 129 suburban communities including those I have mentioned on my site such as Forest Park Real Estate, Oak Park and River Forest is home to 67,000 acres of forest preserves and 18 miles of beautiful beaches and lakefront paths and has over 250 golf courses! There have been 79 Nobel Prize Winners associated with Cook County Illinois. Of the 79 laureates who have Chicago ties, 27 have won in Physics, 23 in cook county real estate image 4Economic Sciences, 15 in Chemistry, 11 in Physiology or Medicine, and three in Literature. Currently 6 Laureates are on the faculty at the University of Chicago. Wow! Cook County has produced some smart people!
Some of the more distinguished North American Top Trade Show distinations are the Rosemont Convention Center and McCormick Place which host more then 1,100 conventions and 140 Trades Shows annually. 21.5 percent of the wealth of households are above the National Average and the county has one of the lowest personal income tax rates in the Nation. Cook County is also home to more then forty museums, one hundred and fifty theaters and thirty four symphony orchestras. The Art Institute of Chicago holds some of the largest collections of Impressionist paintings in the United States.  The only one that is bigger is the Louvre in Paris! That is truly saying a lot!
